About May
I don't come from a traditional teaching background — I learned by watching one of the best. My mother has taught Chinese in China for thirty-five years, and growing up, I absorbed not just her knowledge of the language but her way of sharing it with students: patient, attentive, and deeply personal. That's the foundation I teach from.
For the past twenty years, I've also acted as a bridge between cultures — helping non-Chinese friends learn Mandarin and introducing them to Chinese traditions along the way, something I've always genuinely enjoyed. I'm a native Mandarin speaker with clear, standard pronunciation, and my background in international media has taken me across China, Japan, the U.S., and now France, where having learned Japanese, English, and French myself taught me that language learning is never just vocabulary and grammar — it's a way of understanding how people think and see the world.
My greatest strength is flexibility. I don't teach a fixed curriculum; I build each course around the student in front of me — your goals, your pace, and what genuinely interests you, whether that's everyday conversation, travel, work, the arts, or a deeper curiosity about Chinese history and culture.
Outside of lessons, I love film, music, and food — I compose on the piano, I'm always looking for a new book or director to get into, and I enjoy cooking and swapping recipes. So if you'd rather practice Chinese while talking about a film you've just seen, a book you're reading, or life in China than drilling flashcards, we'll probably get along well.

My relationship with Chinese began with my mother, a Chinese literature teacher whose passion for classical poetry shaped my earliest lessons. From a young age, she had me memorizing verses that became, in time, a doorway not just into the language but into the history and culture woven through it.
Years later, that shared love of poetry became Chinese Poetry for My Daughter (给女儿的古诗课), a YouTube series with Chinese and English subtitles that opened our small classroom to learners around the world. On Superprof, I bring that same spirit into a more personal setting — lessons tailored to your level, your interests, and what you actually want to achieve, whatever your age or starting point.
My own path with languages has taken me far from home: seven years studying and living in Japan, nearly a decade studying and working in the U.S., and now Paris, where I currently live. Having learned Japanese, English, and French myself, I know firsthand what it means to sit on the other side of a new language. That experience shapes how I teach — not just words, pronunciation, and grammar, but the different ways of thinking and communicating that often live just beneath them.
Whether you're learning Chinese for everyday life or want to dive into its literature, history, and culture, we'll build lessons around what genuinely draws you in. For students with specific professional needs — in media, business, academia, or the arts — I work with the real situations and vocabulary you'll actually encounter. I also enjoy coaching actors on Chinese pronunciation, intonation, and delivery of lines.
Lessons are available online or in person for students based in Paris, from complete beginners to advanced speakers.
Most of all, I want this to be an enjoyable and wondrous journey — one full of rewarding discoveries along the way.
