About Sofia

I am a top student at a competitive high school in Allentown, PA, who took 5 AP classes and 3 honors classes last year, with a current 3.95 unweighted GPA. I also am the print editor for our school's newspaper, the varsity captain of our quiz bowl team (which has placed in national competitions), and a writer for our school's literary magazine. I also do Amnesty International, Model UN, Science Fair, game development, and flag football. I have extensive experience with both fiction and nonfiction writing and would be overjoyed to help your student with both reading and writing! I would be best for elementary and middle schoolers in the subjects of English and US History. I can also teach more rudimentary science and math concepts if needed, but I am stronger in the humanities. Peer tutoring is also fine with me in the subjects of English and US History as long as it is not tutoring for any AP classes outside of AP US History.

About the lesson

Since I am in high school, my lessons are best for those in elementary and middle school, but I am not opposed to peer tutoring either!

I have experience with a lot of informal tutoring with my brother as well as friends and classmates.

I also have experience teaching a class of 2nd graders French in-person.

I teach in a friendly and approachable way. I simplify big concepts and words in a way that will not only teach the student the concept, but also will help them learn how to decipher literature, time periods, and vocabulary themselves.

I will often use Google Slides but will not read directly from them- instead using them as a jumping-off point for ideas that relate to your student's goals.

I also love to inject humor into my lessons, and I love coming up with fun memory tricks and mnemonic devices! While other tutors may be dull and only focused on producing higher test scores, I focus on academic success and genuine enjoyment of lessons and the subjects of English and History as a whole- as that is what will lead to the best results.

US History is the story of our country and literature contains stories with important meanings and significance. These are subjects that can and should be enjoyed, not dreaded. I hope to foster a love of English and History in your student!
