About Joseph
Hello! My name is Joseph Villa, and I am an incoming Aeronautics and Astronautics student at Stanford University with a passion for helping students build confidence and succeed in mathematics. Throughout high school, I served as Captain and Mentor of my school's Academic Decathlon team, where I led study sessions and mentored students in mathematics, statistics, economics, and other academic subjects while helping our team earn Garfield High School's first Los Angeles Academic Decathlon Championship.
I have completed advanced mathematics coursework through Calculus II and have taken the AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics exams. Having recently completed these courses myself, I understand the challenges students face and the skills needed to succeed in both the classroom and on standardized exams.
I believe every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to the individual's goals, experience, and learning style. Rather than focusing on memorization, I emphasize conceptual understanding, problem solving, and building the confidence to tackle unfamiliar questions independently. Whether you are preparing for an upcoming exam, improving your grades, strengthening your mathematical foundation, or studying for the SAT Math section, I am committed to creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
My goal is simple: to help every student leave each lesson with a deeper understanding of mathematics, greater confidence in their abilities, and the tools to continue succeeding long after our sessions end.

I believe mathematics is best learned by understanding the reasoning behind each concept rather than memorizing formulas or procedures. My goal is to help students build a strong foundation so they can approach new problems with confidence and think critically instead of relying on shortcuts.
Every lesson begins by identifying the student's current understanding and specific goals. From there, we review key concepts, work through guided examples together, and gradually progress to more challenging practice problems. I encourage students to explain their thought process throughout the lesson, allowing me to identify misconceptions and strengthen their problem-solving skills. Sessions conclude with a summary of the material covered, additional practice recommendations, and study strategies to reinforce learning between lessons.
As an incoming Stanford University engineering student and former Academic Decathlon captain, I understand the challenges students face because I have recently completed many of the same courses myself. My teaching style is patient, personalized, and focused on building both confidence and independence rather than simply providing answers.
My lessons are designed for middle school, high school, and early college students seeking support in Algebra I, Algebra II, Precalculus, Calculus (through Calculus II), Statistics, SAT Math, homework assistance, exam preparation, or strengthening their mathematical foundation.
