About Georgina
Hello! I am a student at the University of Edinburgh and I am currently studying Mathematics. My decision to study mathematics at university occurred to me when I was studying it as an A-level. I really enjoy the theory side of mathematics and how abstract it could be but yet at the same time it is so applicable to the real world.
I started mentoring when I was at sixth form, helping a failing GCSE student with his maths. We met up during lunchtimes or in the mornings, once or twice a week, depending on how much help he felt he needed on particular topics, and eventually improved his grade to a C, which was his target grade. I found a lot of satisfaction in helping him as initially he found it incredibly frustrating to work on his maths, and it was fantastic to see that over time, he was becoming more confident and capable at solving problems presented to him.
After I left sixth form, I worked as an au pair in Italy for three months, looking after two girls, ages 11 and 14. I was mainly there to help improve their spoken English, but I also helped them with their maths and English homework, it was great to be able to help them with their maths even with a language barrier.

I am looking to teach two tutees for up to 6 hours a week, which means that I can spend time and focus on the students to ensure that they are on top of their work.
In terms of structure, I think it is important to have a target grade in mind, and then plan achievable mini goals in order to achieve that grade.
During the first meeting, I would first ask the parent/tutee the tutee's current and target grade, and discuss with them what they think he/she struggles with the most, this gives me a general idea on what the tutee will need from these sessions.
I would ask the tutee to provide me with a few topics they currently do not understand each week and then go over it with them that following session. Afterwards, I aim to provide them with a few questions to do on their own, and scan it back to me within two days, ideally on the same day. This forces the tutee to work on the problems while the knowledge is still fresh in their mind and solidifies their understanding.
Nearing the exam period, I would focus more on past papers, to boost their confidence. They can then show me the questions they didn’t do well in and we can go over it together, picking at specific topics that need improvement. Like my sample question, I aim to make new questions based on the specimen paper from the new syllabus, so that it is similar enough to the style of exam questions they will receive, but different enough each time to challenge them.
