About Shawna
I’m Shawna Penney, a passionate middle school English educator dedicated to helping students become confident communicators, thoughtful readers, and strong writers. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Elmhurst University and am completing my Master’s in Teaching Middle School English at National Louis University. With years of experience teaching, coaching, and mentoring adolescents, I understand how to balance high academic expectations with encouragement and support. My teaching style blends structure, creativity, and connection, creating an engaging learning environment where students feel safe to take risks and grow. I focus on building foundational literacy skills, critical thinking, and high school readiness while honoring each student’s unique voice. I’m excited to partner with families to help learners build confidence, purpose, and lifelong learning skills.

My English lessons are intentionally designed to be structured, engaging, and student-centered, helping learners build real skills they can apply immediately. Each lesson includes clear learning targets, guided instruction, interactive discussion, and purposeful practice, so students understand not just what to do, but why it matters. Lessons focus on writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and critical thinking, with an emphasis on high school readiness and confidence-building.
