About Yessica
I am a poet and former Cornell University lecturer in Creative Writing and an instructor for its Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars Program. In 2015, I graduated with a bachelor's in Comparative Literature from Princeton University where I was the recipient of two fellowship prizes: the Alex Adam Award for Creative Writing and the Henry Richardson Labouisse Fellowship. In 2018, I began pursuing a master's in creative writing at Cornell University with the financial support of the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Until the fall of 2022, I taught Introduction to First-Year Writing and Creative Writing courses at Cornell. My work in the English department earned me the Martin Sampson Teaching Award and the James F. Slevin Assignment Sequence Prize. As a cultural worker, I have developed fun and engaging creative writing workshops for people of all ages, in both Corona, Queens and Medellin, Colombia. My writing and teaching practice have received multiple awards and recognitions, including The Amy Clampitt Poet-in-Residence program, the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, The Henry Richardson Labouisse Prize and the International Literacy Association 30-under-30 recognition.

Working one-on-one with students is one of my greatest joys as an educator. I love engaging people’s writing and finding the questions at the root of people’s thinking. All true learning is co-learning so it would be my honor and gift to learn from you as we engage your discoveries.
During my time as an educator, I have worked with a wide variety of audiences, in both community and university settings. My most recent teaching experience was at Cornell University where I taught general and unique descriptions courses in the Freshman Writing Seminars series and in The Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars Program.
In those classes, I introduced students to the mechanics of academic writing through an interdisciplinary curriculum that focused on marginalized histories and the work of BIPOC writers. For my teaching and lesson plans, I received the Martin Sampson Teaching Award and the James F. Slevin Assignment Sequence Prize.
All lesson plans I’ve developed as a teacher have been meant to awaken students to their inherent brilliance and to the everyday questions that animate their lives. My commitment is also to rigor and discipline. In our sessions, I would invite you to identify the underlying assumptions and contradictions at the heart of your analysis so that we can delve deeper into your insights. Whether you are a high school or college student, I would love to support you in engaging writing as a fun and exciting tool for thought.
Trained in the classic MFA workshop methodology, I would be super excited to read your poems and offer feedback to encourage your writing's development. I believe in everyone's inherent brilliance and creative capacity and would do my best to offer the kind of feedback that would make you excited to return to your draft.
For people who are just beginning their creative writing journey, I am happy to offer one-hour introductory workshops on the craft of poetry, either as a single class or a more intensive series.
I am super looking forward to meeting with you. All lessons can be taught in either English or Spanish :)read less
