About Ali

I'm a teacher and a communication professional, and I bring both to every lesson.

I started my career as a journalist, interviewing ministers, executives and community leaders and learning how to ask the right questions. At 30, I made a big career change and moved into strategic communications, rising to director at a multinational strategic communications agency. I advised governments and senior executives across the Gulf and Australia on media relations, thought leadership, reputation management and stakeholder engagement, in both English and Arabic. I still practise public relations today, so what I teach reflects how the industry works now.

Teaching has always run alongside my career. I taught Arabic to non-Arabic speakers for four years in Dubai and Sharjah. I now teach academic English to Arabic speakers in Australia and develop university-level courses in communication theory and qualitative research methods.

I hold a Master of Arts in Communication and Media Studies from Monash University, professional certifications in stakeholder engagement (IAP2) and communication measurement (AMEC), and serve on the board of IABC NSW Hunter and Coastal.

I know what it feels like to start again, prove yourself and learn the unwritten rules of a new environment. I also know both sides: what your lecturers are looking for, and what employers are looking for. My job is to help you deliver both.

My lessons are built on a simple idea: you shouldn't have to memorise theory. You should understand it, because you can see it working in real life.

In each lesson, I take a communication, media or PR theory and bring it to life with real examples from my 18 years as a journalist and PR practitioner. We connect each theory to the news you read, the campaigns you see and the organisations you want to work for. Once you see how a theory works in the real world, you remember it, apply it with confidence in your assignments, and use it in your career.

Every lesson is 60 minutes, online or in person, and built around your subjects and your goals.

In our final session, we look beyond your studies. We discuss your career goals, and I help you draw a clear, practical map to reach them, based on my industry knowledge and what employers in communication, media and PR really look for.
