About Polly

My interest in tutoring stems from my own experiences as a student. Having lived in China and later moving to New York, I have encountered diverse educational systems with vastly different approaches to learning. In China, the rigid structure of the curriculum often left little room for curiosity and independent thinking, while my experience in the U.S. opened doors to a more inquiry-driven and personalized approach. This contrast has given me unique insights into the struggles students face when learning new material, particularly in STEM subjects, where concepts can feel abstract and intimidating. Through tutoring, I aim to bridge that gap by fostering an environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and ultimately develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. My expertise primarily lies in physics and mathematics, ranging from foundational principles to more advanced topics. I have a special affinity for quantum mechanics, and I enjoy breaking down its counterintuitive principles into digestible ideas that spark curiosity. Additionally, my interest in electrical engineering allows me to bring a practical perspective to problem-solving, integrating theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. My teaching style is interactive and adaptive—I tailor my approach based on each student’s learning style, strengths, and areas that need improvement. Whether it’s working through problem sets, explaining theoretical concepts, or providing practical examples, I strive to make learning a collaborative and enriching experience. Beyond academics, I also have experience as a volunteer interpreter for the Chinatown Tenants Union, assisting seniors who struggle with English fluency. This role has strengthened my communication skills and my ability to explain complex information in a clear, patient, and empathetic manner—qualities that are essential in a tutor. Additionally, my involvement in my church, where I play piano during services, has reinforced my commitment to mentorship and community support. Music has been an integral part of my life, just as my Chinese heritage has shaped my perspective on education and perseverance. Tutoring is not just about improving grades; it’s about empowering students to think critically, gain confidence, and develop a lifelong love for learning. I am excited to share my knowledge, encourage curiosity, and support students in their academic journey. Whether you’re struggling with equations or looking for a fresh perspective on physics, I am here to help guide you toward success with enthusiasm and dedication.

Education has been a transformative force in my life, and I believe that learning is not just about acquiring knowledge but about cultivating curiosity, resilience, and a passion for discovery. My own academic journey has been shaped by a deep appreciation for physics—particularly quantum mechanics—and a desire to help others navigate complex subjects with clarity and confidence. As a tutor, my goal is to make challenging concepts accessible, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives.
