About Nancy
I’ve Master’s and Doctorate degrees in education, have studied writing, and have been trained in Orton-Gillingham. I’m creative, energetic, and engaging. I’m a reader and a writer and love teaching both. For over thirty years, I’ve worked as a classroom teacher, professor, learning specialist, and tutor with students Pre-K-adults with a range of strengths and challenges including giftedness, those on the spectrum, as well as students with dyslexia and ADHD. I am committed to helping students be actively engaged in their own learning. I teach remotely nationwide and internationally. Independent tutoring affords the opportunity to do what I do and love most of all, TEACH!

Tailored to meet the individual needs of each student, I aim to instill students with an interest in and curiosity about the many forms and uses of the written word. Creating a balance between direct skill instruction in writing, decoding, and comprehension including figurative language, vocabulary building, and summarizing with learning in context, I engage students in identifying specific skills in context of the print around them. For example, after a lesson on long and short vowels, I might take students on a “word walk”, identifying and writing down words those vowel types they see on street signs, license plates, and store fronts. I know students have learned a concept when they can identify it in a different context different from the one in which it was taught. Two examples come to mind: (1) ninth grader Tina, bursting into class with “Nancy, went to IHOP this weekend. Did you know there are two vowels in IHOP!?” (2) After a four-week summer class for fourth and fifth graders in figurative language, I asked everyone to use a figure of speech illustrating what that thought of the class. Fifth grader, Mim: “ You hit the nail on the head, it was just right.” A typical 45-60 minute lesson (specifics vary according to age/grade of student) 1. Introduction (Clap hello, name (syllabication) or write in log. (What was something you found interesting this week?) 2. Direct Instruction: Decoding, Handwriting, essay writing, grammar, spelling, comprehension 3. Book Reading (related skills from #2) 4. Closure: Game reinforcing skills A typical 45-60 minute lesson (specifics vary according to age/grade of student) 1. Introduction (Clap hello, name (syllabication) or write in log. Closure: Game reinforcing skills Through reading a range of texts in various genres, students develop an awareness of strong writing which “show” rather than “tell”, thus developing the skills they need to strengthen their own writing. Differentiating instruction reflects my knowledge of and experience with a range of strengths, challenges, and learning differences including, but are not limited to, second language learners, ADHD, dyslexia, giftedness, and the autism spectrum. I am committed to helping students be actively engaged in their own learning. I teach remotely nationwide and internationally.

Writing a recommendation for Nancy Klein as a teacher/tutor makes me smile. Why? Because I am 100% certain that Nancy is a great and creative teacher, who really cares about each student.
I have known Nancy for twenty years, first as her minister and after my retirement, as a friend. We keep in touch regularly. I know that Nancy's true calling is working with kids. Teaching/tutoring energizes her and she becomes a detective, searching for the optimal approach to spark interest in each kid. I'd say they are lucky to have Nancy Klein on their "Learning Team."
I am mother of four grown children, and a grandmother of sixteen! I have personally seen how teachers change lives. I have known a few teachers. I would call Nancy's enthusiasm and resourcefulness exceptional
She really loves her work, I believe that is why Nancy changes lives.Nancy was a fellow colleague and currently subcontracts for me as a tutor. She brings to her instructional practice a wealth of information and many different ways to engage learners. Nancy seeks to engage her students and often geos above and beyond to ensure their success.

My pricing is based on my education, training, many years of experience, and the time I put into planning each lesson to meet the interests, strengths, and challenges of each student. Planning includes researching appropriate books and materials. In order to be accessible to as many students as possible, I am however, willing to make an arrangement manageable for both of us. Thank you.
