About Anne
As an experienced educator of over 30 years experience I have developed a passion for teaching children and students to read. Initially establishing corrective reading programs for high school students I have become more and more curious about why children reach high school still unable to read beyond a Year One level. Children can be labeled 'dyslexic', ADHD, on the autism spectrum, cognitively delayed, but labels don't help us answer how to teach these students to read. The recent pandemic opened my eyes when local parents used this website to seek my help during the homeschooling period. My observations during these teaching sessions found that parents have little understanding about how to teach their child to read, or what book is suitable for them. Home readers are often 'leveled' but still beyond the First Grade student trying to learn their sight words and phonics. Screen time in silence has replaced the rhymes, chants and interactive games played in the past. Our children are 'sound poor'. They need enrichment. The 3 R approach: Rhythm, rhyme and reason

Rhythm, Rhyme and Reason. Learning to read with the three ‘R’s. A phonemic approach to developing a child’s understanding of the ‘graphemes’ that represent our spoken language. Did you know that both traditional nursery rhymes and simple nonsense poems and chants contain the 44 sounds that make up our English language and that these are the foundation stones for learning to read? Through repeated singing and acting out these rhymes become ‘earworms’ in a child’s brain from an early age, developing their ability to differentiate the 44 sounds, developing their speech and finally their ability to match sound to letters. Ie learning to read. There is a common saying that a preschooler needs to have 1000 books read to them to become a successful reader. How many of us have achieved that? How many of us still sing rhymes and chants? Screens have become an entertaining substitute. Many of the programs are educational and fun. But children are silent. There is little oral interaction. As well many of these programs and games on screen have English and American dialects; accents which do not reflect our dialect’s vocabulary and sounds. So for time-poor, guilt-ridden parents who have read so far- don't despair. We have a small group program that focuses specifically on teaching the 44 sounds in our English dialect and gives your child the building blocks they need to learn to read. The Program: Our ‘Three R’ 3R approach uses both traditional and contemporary rhymes to teach pre-schoolers the 44 sounds required to be a successful reader. Small group based, our program ensures each child is fully engaged in the program. 45 minutes duration. In Phase One, suitable for 3-4 year olds, children will listen, sing, chant, move and play games while focusing on a phoneme subset or ‘rime’. For example the short vowel 'a' and the long vowel 'A'. Then letters of the alphabet are introduced in a systematic grapho-phonemic sequence. In Phase Two, suitable for 5-6 year olds, and those who have completed Phase One, children will progress to beginning blending sounds to make real and nonsense words. Our structured grapho-phonemic reading program is full of fun and hands-on activities and games.
