About Peter
Hi! I'm Peter, and I recently graduated from Lewis & Clark College with a BA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I've been a tutor since high school and have spent the past year substitute teaching for grades K-12 before pursuing a PharmD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a student, I was a four-year varsity athlete, competing in cross country and track & field, and made several appearances on the Dean's List. As someone who has had several academic ups and downs, I know what it feels like to overcome struggle in the classroom, and I'm passionate about helping others do the same!

I have a few key principles that guide every session:
Diagnosing before teaching; The real leverage is understanding where understanding breaks down, whether it's a foundational gap from earlier material, a working memory issue, or just surface-level confusion about the current topic.
Retrieval over re-reading; I believe that practice problems, flash cards, and quizzes are far more effective than simply rehashing material. Real learning requires students to grapple with concepts.
Teaching students to monitor their own understanding by asking themselves, "Do I actually know this or do I just recognize it?" The ability to make this distinction is often what separates those who thrive in the classroom from those who struggle.
Finally, I do not believe that tutoring should be an indefinite intervention. I believe in giving students the tools to maximize their learning potential without the need for a tutor.
