About Eliza

Eliza Partika is a multimedia journalist covering the intersection of health equity and justice. Following her graduation from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2022, she was a writer for Medscape Medical News and WebMD covering primary care, reproductive health and pediatrics. Today, Eliza is a freelancer for AfroLA, a nonprofit newsroom that reports on L.A. through the lens of Black Angelenos’ experiences, and the Crescenta Valley Weekly, a community newspaper. She's also an elementary school librarian, so when she isn't in the field, you can find her with her nose buried in a book, or teaching little ones their ABCs.

Her print, digital, audio, photojournalism and video work has published with UC Irvine, UCLA Health and UC Berkeley Public Health communications, WebMD, The Glendale News Press, The San Marino Tribune, The Benicia Herald, City News Service, KQED, Reveal News, KALW, Cal Matters, Bay Area News Group, and other reputable news sources. Most recently, Eliza partnered with USC Center for Health Journalism on an investigation into delays in ambulance wait times in Los Angeles, and an exploration of permanent housing options for domestic violence survivors.

Each lesson consists of a 5-minute warm-up and 55 minutes of focused teaching on whatever your child might have questions about.

My philosophy of teaching is to tailor the learning experience to the needs of the student, to emphasize soft skills and critical thinking as much as hard technology skills needed for the information age. I will engage students with activities and exercises relevant to themselves and their communities. Teaching is not only about passing on a love of learning to my students. For me, teaching is an opportunity to engage with and learn from your students. I believe any student can learn, especially if they are given the resources, access, and attention they need to succeed.

Some students are visual, some are tactile, some learn best by hearing and repeating. It is the teacher’s job to pay attention to how their students best absorb the material, and then to provide opportunities for students to nurture their own learning instincts and curiosity .

In my previous position as an elementary school librarian, I witnessed students at varying reading levels and reading interests thrive when they are given the correct access to reading, and they are met where they are at with their reading level and encouraged to improve. Encouraging learning at home as well as at school, and having an active space to engage with and assist parents in participating in their child’s education is another way students can improve their learning outcomes.
