About Patty
I am currently a Learning Specialist at a Denver area Elementary school and I love my job. One of the most rewarding parts is seeing my students gain confidence in their abilities. Every kid can learn and we all learn differently. I figure out what works for each student and focus on that.
One of my recent students came to me when he was in 5th grade. He has dyslexia and said he hated to read and write. I found a book based upon his interests, we read it together and then suddenly he didn't think reading was so bad. As his reading grew stronger, he started reading on his own, outside our lessons.
It was the same with writing. We started working on a story about something he was interested in and suddenly he was working on that on his own at home.
In his last semester of 8th grade, he made the Dean's List!
I was so proud of him, but not just because of the grades, but because of how hard he was working and the fact that he wanted to do well.
I know all of my students have strengths and I love to watch them grow!

I base my teaching style for reading/writing on the Orton Gillingham (OG) method, with a focus on meeting the student where they are at and going forward.
Lesson plans include working on sounds, blending sounds into words and learning "red words" or words that do not sound like they are spelled. We work on reading and writing these words.
Math lessons are developed around the student's needs. If they are struggling with multi-digit math or word problems, that is what we work on.
All lessons include a warm-up (Do Now), and at least one game.
Learning should be fun. Kids will retain and learn more if they are engaged.
One of my main focuses with my students is always building their self-confidence. It is amazing what they can do when they believe they can do it.

Perfect! Patty was great! My daughter said she made the lesson fun and was easy going and patient with her. It's so fantastic to have a special education tutor always trying to find a way for your child to understand.
