About Jim
I am a teacher, elections official, public office holder and bureaucrat in a license bureau. I have loved history all my life and want to pass my joy on to others. My previous experience was in a public high school. Subsequently, I spent 6 years in the Ohio House of Representatives and that experience gives me insights into both history and civics. I also sold election equipment and ran elections in several different states. I spent 20 years working in a license bureau and have benefitted from the interaction with my customers who came from all over the world. I like working with people.

When I teach history I try to emphasize 2 things: you must try to see events through the lenses of people who lived very different lives with very different values and very different technologies. I also try to remind students that the participants in history did not know how things would come out. We do, and that can be a disadvantage in understanding how people perceived THEIR world.
I think it's important that students understand that there are not only 2 sides to every issue, but often more. Consequently I like to have students arguing different sides of an issue.
I have one former student who became the Chair of History at Cornell. Another because president of the Ohio Bar Association.
