About Rachel
My name is Rachel Crane and I am a Science Communicator, Explorer, and Mentor. I work for myself as an Independent Contractor in a variety of roles that take advantage of my knowledge and certifications as a Marine Ecologist, PADI Master Scuba Instructor, and licensed USCG 100-ton Captain. I am always open to new opportunities, and I am currently learning and honing my skills as a nature and wildlife photographer and videographer. When I am home in Key Largo I either captain vessels for science professionals working to restore the Florida Keys Reef Tract or for eco-tourism companies to educate visitors on the importance of the world’s marine ecosystems. I enjoy mentoring young professionals on boating and scuba diving skills, and providing them with the abilities and knowledge to navigate themselves to their life and career of choice. I balance my time on the water with my remote role as the Director of Education and Training with Diveheart, a scuba diving training agency that focuses on building confidence, independence, and self-esteem in the lives of children, adults, and veterans with disabilities through scuba diving, scuba therapy, and related activities. When I am not home I am traveling the ocean as a member of the Field Staff Team aboard Lindblad Expedition and National Geographic vessels. My role onboard is multifaceted, dynamic, and exciting! I lead excursions as a naturalist and captain on land and aboard expedition craft, I have an incredible platform to tell science communication stories via informal and formal presentations, and I scuba dive in these wild places to gather video footage of the critters and ecosystem below the surface and share this footage with our guests. I have a passion for roles that allow me to facilitate the information and view that others have of wild places in a way that helps them relate to and care for it. I tend to focus on how interconnected everything is through the lens of ocean and climate ecology stories. I love taking research and disseminating it into an easily understood form that is both accessible to many education levels and elicits a conversation and change afterward. I am open and available to new opportunities, interviews, and providing career advice. Please feel free to reach out to me, but be patient- I might be underwater!

I am a very chill and laid back individual. I prefer to teach through stories and examples rather than rote memorization or rigorous studying. I aim for you to truly understand a subject and be able to apply that information to the real world around you. Through this process, I find that my students not only remember concepts, they actually enjoy learning about them! I am also open to just chatting about ocean careers and giving advice!

Perfect! Rachel's words and advices for my niece were really precious.. Arianna felt that her enthusiasm for the marine world and her career choice was renovated and they will surely meet again when together in Florida. I'm so happy I found her, my intuition was perfect. Thank you very very much and best wishes!
- Loredana reached out to me on behalf of her niece, and connected us for a great conversation about navigating ocean and marine career fields related to training dolphins and getting scuba certified!Rachel's response :
