About Rachel
I have an M.A. in Communications and a B.A. in English, with experience as a T.A. in an English grammar class in university.
I have been tutoring for over 7 years, including helping clients with English reading, writing, and grammar. I also edit essays and reports. My clients have ranged from elementary school-aged students, to high school students, to adults wanting to practice business English writing or conversational English. I currently also teach AP English online.
In the past, I have taught English writing and grammar to small classes of 5-10 elementary school students at an evening learning centre. I was also a teaching assistant for two semesters in a first-year university English grammar class, where I marked a large number of university English essays. As a student in high school, I was a peer tutor in high school for a Grade 9 math class, and I also had a co-op placement in a Grade 3 class.

As a tutor, I take into account everyone's individual personalities and needs. I try to get to know students first to determine the areas they most need to improve, along with their learning styles. The more time I spend with someone, the more I can learn about his or her weaknesses and strengths in English reading, writing, grammar, or comprehension. I want people to have fun as they learn, and I think learning about someone's interests and passions helps achieve that.
My learning approach is flexible and can be adjusted according to the needs of the students. My methods range from using workbooks with exercises that cover grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing skills (for elementary students); to using PowerPoint materials I created, along with other online worksheets, to teach older students essay writing and reading comprehension skills. I also use a grammar workbook and some of my own material to teach reading and writing skills to adults.
I assign homework when parents request homework to be assigned to the students, and I can also specifically focus on assisting with homework, writing longer pieces such as essays, or reading entire books to expand understanding and critical thinking skills.
