About Isla

With over five years of experience as a piano tutor, I have developed a deep passion for guiding students on their musical journeys. My own love for music began at a young age, and it has grown into a lifelong commitment to both performing and teaching. I have had the privilege of studying with esteemed instructors and performing in various settings, from intimate recitals to larger concert venues. This diverse background has enriched my understanding of different musical genres and techniques, which I now pass on to my students.

My teaching philosophy centers around the belief that every student has unique potential and learning styles. I am dedicated to creating a personalized and engaging learning experience for each student. By tailoring lessons to individual goals and interests, whether they are in classical, jazz, pop, or other genres, I ensure that my students remain motivated and inspired. I believe that fostering a love for music is just as important as developing technical skills, and I strive to balance these elements in my teaching.

In addition to focusing on piano skills, I incorporate a broad musical education into my lessons. This includes music theory, ear training, and the exploration of various musical instruments like the harpsichord, synthesizer, and keyboard. My goal is to develop well-rounded musicians who not only excel at playing the piano but also have a comprehensive understanding of music. I encourage my students to experiment with different sounds and styles, promoting creativity and a deeper appreciation for the art form.

Continuing education and professional development are also vital aspects of my career. I regularly attend workshops, masterclasses, and conferences to stay updated on the latest teaching methods and musical trends. This commitment to lifelong learning enables me to bring fresh ideas and techniques to my lessons, ensuring that my students receive the highest quality of instruction. My ultimate aim is to inspire confidence and a lasting passion for music in each of my students, equipping them with the skills and enthusiasm to pursue their musical dreams.

In my piano lessons, I strive to create an inspiring and supportive environment where students of all levels can thrive. Each lesson begins with a warm-up to ensure students are physically and mentally prepared for practice. We then review previous material to reinforce learning and identify areas that may need additional attention. This methodical approach helps build a strong foundation and fosters a sense of accomplishment.

A key component of my teaching is customization. I tailor each lesson to the student's individual goals and musical interests, whether they aim to master classical pieces, explore the rhythms of jazz and funk, or dive into the emotive world of soul and R&B. By focusing on genres that resonate with the student, I keep the learning process engaging and relevant. Additionally, I introduce new techniques and concepts progressively, ensuring that each step is manageable and builds on prior knowledge.

I emphasize not only technical proficiency but also musical expression. Through exercises and repertoire, I teach students to convey emotion and character in their playing. This involves dynamic control, phrasing, and articulation, as well as an understanding of the historical and cultural context of the music. I incorporate listening exercises and discussions to develop a deeper appreciation for different styles and traditions, enhancing the overall musical experience.

Lastly, I incorporate modern technology and tools into lessons. From using synthesizers to explore sound design to employing music software for composition and recording, I expose students to a broad range of skills. This holistic approach ensures that students are well-rounded musicians, capable of adapting to various musical scenarios. Whether aiming for a professional career or playing for personal enjoyment, my goal is to equip students with the skills and confidence to express themselves fully through their music.
