About Lauren
I am a senior at California State University-Long Beach. I am a math education major. In my free time, I draw, paint, play guitar, and sing. I'm hoping to teach high school or middle school math. I graduated high school summa cum laude (cumulative grade point of 4.7+) and with a biliteracy certificate in Spanish.
Tutoring is honestly one of my favorite things. I have been tutoring since 2015. I started tutoring through the National Honors Society and just fell in love with it. I have experience tutoring all grades and even creating lesson plans. When I started out, I was tutoring in pre-calculus and algebra 2. The high school students that I tutored told me that I raised their grades by two letter grades.
In 2017, I taught Adobe Photoshop to at-risk youth at a non-profit. The kids I taught had no idea what could be done with Photoshop. Now, their artwork is being sold at a fundraising gala. I also helped with math. The kids did NOT like homework time. I managed to convince the students that math could be fun. I used color-by-math facts for the kids who would finish their homework quickly. It is a more engaging way to practice math facts. In my first year of college, I worked with at-risk youth through my university's work-study program. I helped middle school boys with their homework. Now I work as an instructor at a tutoring center where I mainly teach English and math.
Seeing people smile and get excited about subjects like math and science is an amazing feeling. I love knowing that I can help and make a difference.

When working with new students, I enjoy learning about students. I think it's very important to meet students where they are. I ask what he or she expects to get out of tutoring, where he or she is now, and where he or she wants to be. After this, I ask about what the student enjoys doing. This will help me create relatable examples for him or her in the future. Every student is different in how he or she learns. That is why it is important to learn about a student to be able to adapt to his or her methods.
