About Nicholas

My first goal is to make you feel smart back in the classroom, to help you develop an understanding to the point that you can tutor your friends. You'll be the one that people go to with questions. To be able to raise your hand and give a correct answer confidently. To be the one to organize study sessions because you can help, not because you need the help. And to also be able to confidently ask for help.

I will help you do this partly by having you teach concepts back to me. “While we teach, we learn.” — Seneca

I base this methodology in my own experience with Math and how I've been able to help other people with Math and other tricky subjects.

As a child, I was always curious about Math:

- From second grade on, I was sitting with the kids in the grades above me to take math classes with them.
- I voluntarily did summer school at 12 to advance myself.
- At 14 in ninth grade I took AP Calculus BC and AP Physics, getting 5 on both exams.
- At 15 I went to the HCSSiM Math Camp at Hampshire College, took the SAT and got a 1560 (800 Math, 760 Verbal).
- I was curious about Math on my own time and bought books on Number Theory, Cryptography, and Computational Linguistics.

During this whole time, I would explain what I was doing to my peers in age, and to my family, and I was able to translate those advanced topics to ideas they could understand without doing the Math class themselves.

I believe no one is bad at math. All you need is a teacher who can talk to you, understand how you think and talk about ideas, and who can then adapt the instruction of math to your words and way of thinking.

It's very important to me that I learn early on what feels like a win to you, and to get some of those immediately so you can feel traction in your learning. Along with teaching you math, I'll be teaching you how to be self-motivated to do the detailed work of math and persevering through problems. I'll teach you patience with understanding challenging problems, and how to change your perspective on these problems to find the right way to understand and solve them.

Math comes naturally to me. I also have a talent for metaphor, where I'm able to distill complex and challenging concepts into a simplified metaphor accessible to any audience.

These are skills you'll be able to take to all of the math that you learn, and to other subjects as well.

My professional career has included 15 years of desktop support at a Top 5 business school, where I explained tricky concepts to a diverse and often frustrated audience of MBA students, PhD students, staff, and faculty. This time explaining things to top tier teachers has honed me into a patient and agile educator myself.

I teach grades 4 - 12, covering arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, set theory, graph theory, number theory, abstract algebra, and analysis.
