About Lorinda
I have worked the last 5 years primarily in Los Angeles (South LA and East LA) teaching middle and high school students. I love helping learners discover their light bulb moments! I do my best to motivate all learners and show them that everyone is a math person. I have had so much success showing students how they use math every day even without realizing it. One thing many teachers do not teach are test-taking strategies, there will always come a time when you just do not know the answer on a test it happens to everyone. I pride myself on helping students learn how to eliminate obviously wrong choices and make a best guess. I have found having this skill helps many students not have as much testing anxiety and works in all subjects.

My lessons generally start by assessing students. Rather than just reviewing regular homework, my focus is on rebuilding foundational mathematical skills so students can access grade-level coursework. Key areas of focus include:
-Number Sense and Operations, Teaching students to understand how numbers work, including counting, place value, fractions, decimals, and basic math facts. --Math Vocabulary, Explicitly teaching and providing context for math terminology (e.g., "sum," "quotient," or "difference") so students can understand word problems.
-Problem-Solving Strategies, Helping students break down the underlying structure (schema) of word problems and teaching them step-by-step methods to organize their thinking.
-Math Confidence & Mindset, Fostering a positive attitude toward math, helping students overcome anxiety, and teaching them to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process.
