About Alun
As an undergraduate, I studied biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, drug discovery, entomology and basically all the sciences you could think of due to my program of Integrated Sciences at McMaster University. We also studied four years of mathematics. which I followed by studying mathematics in graduate school. From the knowledge and expertise side of the job, I believe this gives me some legitimacy.
I have been tutoring for 13 years, starting as a high-school student myself, and doing both private and institutional tutoring since. Privately, I've tutored everything from computational linguistics to pure math, and anything in between I needed to. Two of the students I tutored went on to get their bachelor's in computer science and software engineering since.
Institutionally, at McMaster I've TA'd over 10 classes as an undergraduate, and more as a graduate student, so I have experience running tutorial, marking, and running one-on-one tutoring sessions as needed. This gave me a huge amount of experience working with many students at different levels and with different needs, and helped me develop a more adaptive way of teaching.
Given COVID-19, and having to go online, I adapted to online tutoring, and have actually found my preference is for online sessions (I find them more efficient, and can share written work with you after), and so if you'd need in-person tutoring, please let me know if this wouldn't be a good match.

The nature of my lesson plans tends to be quite dynamic once the student gets in the room because as much as I can plan ahead and make targeted goals for where we want to be, what the student is able to bring to the lesson is going to be a big factor in terms of how much of that we're actually going to be able to accomplish. And that can be good or bad. We may be able to accomplish less than we anticipated in which case we need to reassess or in fact the student may be able to accomplish more than expected in which case I might need to dip into next week's plans or on the fly come up with more material for them of an appropriate nature. It's because of my skill in these areas that I'm able to come up with dynamic plans as they come, rather than being stuck with a static plan.
The principle of my lesson plans is to identify points of pressure that the student is facing. And that often falls on the side of a student lagging. So, a point of pressure I define to be something that they're just not getting. Some misconception that they have that is harming the student in the way that they do their work. So, let's take a math problem, for example. If a student doesn't quite understand the concept of division, then them trying to use it might end up in an error. And I can ask them, "are you sure about your work?" And that gets them to look back over the work, and together we'll look, and we'll say, "okay, is this right?" "Is this bit right?" "Is this bit right?" And we'll find the point where something went wrong.
But, equally, when the student gets the question right, I sometimes ask the same thing. "Are you sure?" And that forces the same thing. They have to go back over the steps of the problem. And for each one, validate it. Determine "I know it's true because of this, that, or the other." "I know that this must be true." "I know that this follows from the previous, and so my final answer must be correct." So not only are they reinforcing what they know to be true, but they're also getting a framework for problems where they're not necessarily sure if their work is correct or not, such as in assessments.

In-person sessions, if viable, are charged at a higher rate of $30, whereas remote sessions (which I stand-by as the better option) are only charged at a rate of $25 to reflect the difference in effort to undertake the session.
