About John

I am a recent graduate of the University of Liverpool where I studied all the fundamental modules in mathematics such as calculus and linear algebra, eventually specialising my degree on statistics, statistical models and data science using R.

At GCSE I started in set 3 out of 5. I was, and am in no way "gifted" as a mathematician. I understand the difficulty of trying to get better and can help other students make the same giant strides in mathematics that I have made before !

I am always available outside of lesson time through email and message, free of charge for help with urgent homework and questions. I will try my best to reply as soon as possible with hints, tips and explained similar examples so students can fully understand the mathematical concepts being tested in the problem.

I teach using zoom and the screen share feature so students can see exactly what I'm doing, the question, and how I am solving it. At the end of the lesson, me and the student will go over the concepts taught in a fun personalised kahoot quiz to ensure the student has understood the concepts being taught.

My teaching philosophy is not learning numerous tricky formulae, but understanding the concepts behind them. This ensures that even in higher grade questions where there will be tricks and twists, that students will be able to work their way through them confidently.

I will first offer a free consultation to the student to understand where they are at in their mathematical journey, and use this to understand their weaknesses and where they need extra help. This could include going over class work, looking at previous tests or through an informal chat with the student taking me through where they think they are dropping marks. Using this information I will go away and make personalised interactive exercises for the next lesson focusing on the students weak points to build confidence in concepts that previously could have seemed impossible to understand. Closer to exam time I will concentrate learning mostly on past papers. In my experience, I have noticed examiners like to ask questions on some concepts more than others. It is a big syllabus for students to learn, and examiners can't ask everything. For example, from my time as a GCSE student I noticed trigonometry was on the exam every year! Noticing this allowed me to revise the concept thoroughly, so when it did come up in the exam, I was more than prepared to answer the question. There are many more concepts that are like this and going through past papers with me will allow the student the same benefit I got.

If requested, I of course offer reports and progress updates for parents/guardians so they understand how the student is improving, what they are working on and most importantly, how this is helping improve their grades!
