My teaching method is to teach the students how I managed to learn the topic, so for example if I didn’t know how to do something I’d break it down into much easier topics and focus on every way I could answer the question. I like to teach people this way as it worked for me even in hard problems so could work for the students as well. However if this isn’t the right method I’d always start from the first step guiding the pupil along the way and often giving example questions to solidify their knowledge. I often base my classes on topics that the student has either recently done or will be doing soon in classes to create a stronger sense of confidence in the subject. In addition to this I would normally give the student to “warm up” with a multiplication grid or something similar for the first 10 minutes of the session as this not only gives them a visual sense of improvement (as they improve as the weeks go on) but it also gets their brain in the maths mood which is key to actually starting a lesson. Finally, I like to test my pupils with a maths paper at whatever level they’re at as this gives me a wider range of topics they struggle on, which we can improve upon at a later date and whenever exams are coming up I’ll often use multiple mock papers just to build up the student’s confidence in doing the paper.
