About Amanda
I originally trained as a physicist (to PhD level), then a project manager, with a specialism in atmospheric science and wide interest in all areas of science and education. After 5 years scientific research and 15 years modernising the civil service, I began taking science and maths workshops into local primary schools, and then moved into tutoring secondary school students. Note: I went up to Oxford University from a solidly working class background as a ‘first generation’ student. My proven ability to break the mould and forge new and challenging paths, when added to my academic depth, may provide additional inspiration, motivation and belief for some students.

*** STOP PRESS - I am currently fully booked (as at autumn 2025). *** 'Understand the topic, be able to answer the questions.' First and foremost, I aim for my students at all levels to really understand and be able to conceptualise the topic at hand. Where students have not understood at school/college during class, I use a range of techniques to assist understanding, including analogy, visualisation, derivation and linking across topics. I have a track record of working through explanations that are accessible to all, with ‘points to ponder’ to stretch the more gifted. Once we have achieved understanding, the next step is applying it to interpret and solve problems. This can be done in different ways, and exam tips and techniques also come up here. For example, I can provide questions that the student and I will work through together in the tutorial, or the student may send through 2-3 questions from school/college that they have found difficult and we can work through those instead. Occasionally, and only if the student wishes, I may set a small amount of homework to help consolidate the week’s learning. I mainly tutor up to GCSE, but also take on a limited number of A-Level and KS3 science and maths students. At all levels, my approach is friendly, energetic, down to earth, confident and approachable. I adapt to each student’s individual needs, really care about my students, and hope to enthuse them with my genuine love of science and maths! This approach has proven successful with a wide range of students – exam results typically increase by 1-2 grades at GCSE, but sometimes I've had students going up by 5-6 grades (e.g. from level 0 to 6)! Currently, I am tutoring online or face-to-face at my home address in NW Hampshire (between Andover and Winchester).

"A friend recommended Dr Spice to me to help my son with his studies. My son, lower sixth A level mathematics student has found his first term at Sixth Form College very challenging and is not performing at the required level expected. After discussion with him he was extremely happy to enrol with Dr Spice to help him with the tasks set by college.
After looking at Dr Spice's credentials and discussing my son’s requirements I felt highly confident that she would be able to assess and assist with my sons studies. She is highly enthusiastic and diligent in her approach to tutoring.
Dr Spice, assessed my son and then discussed with him the plan to assist and encourage him with his curriculum. My son has been very positive and has found the tutorial sessions very beneficial. Before the tiers were introduced he attended two face to face tutorials then moved onto online tutoring with Amanda which has worked out really well.
I am very happy with his progress in terms of his understanding and confidence in approaching complex mathematical tasks and hope to see the benefits from next term college assessments."Sarah Wright
Dr Spice assisted my child with Science whilst in Year 8. She bought Sicence to life with various experiments and explained things repeatedly until they sank in. She was very diligent in her preparation for lessons undertaking extensive research for resources. Would recommend without any hesitation. My daughter also enjoyed her lessons and saw her school marks improve significantly.View more recommendations
