About Adam
About me ----------- For the past 6 months, I have worked as a maths teaching assistant at Q E Girls’ School. I took on many teaching roles and responsibilities, which I expand upon below. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in June 2012 with a degree in mathematics, with honours. I also attained A, A and B in my maths, further maths and physics A Levels, respectively. Then I worked in finance departments and technology, while tutoring part-time. Because my passion for helping others with their maths has grown, I decided to become a full-time tutor. I am now an experienced online and in-person maths tutor and can prepare secondary school students to both GCSE and A Level. I am proficient at identifying a student’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling me to propose areas to focus on to promote effective learning progression. I am patient and can explain the same concept in a variety of ways to help students understand ideas and topics. I have been passionate about maths from a very young age, and I am eager to pass on my knowledge and passion to help students gain a better understanding of maths. Experience ------------- During my maths teaching assistant job, I: • Circuited classes of all levels to help students with their maths. • Tutored year 7-10 students in a separate class to the main one. These students were performing below their expected grade. Many of these students also had behavioural issues when in the main class, and it was my role to manage their behaviour as well as teach them maths. • Tutoring students in Years 12-13, who were performing below their expected grades, in extra tutoring sessions. I was tasked with recapping topics and going through exam questions with these students. These sessions required planning to cover the topics the students struggled with. I had to be efficient to get through all the material and cater to the level of each group and individual students as much as possible. __________________________________________________ Skills and interests • Club level chess player. • Hertfordshire tennis league player. • Top 1% contributor on the largest maths Q&A website, math.stackexchange.com. • I enjoy cooking, Pilates and going to the gym. • Self-taught in programming and computer science through online courses.

I have extensive knowledge of elementary maths and I am familiar with all exam boards and all syllabuses up to A Level including maths and further maths. As well as my regular students, I have also tutored: • primary school students in preparation for SATs • students from Spain • those with SEN (Special Educational Needs) due to long-term illness or learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and anxiety. I prepare each lesson to bring out the best in each student. This includes organisational structure, time management, recapping fundamentals, problem-solving and exam technique. It is often not the quantity of work that makes a difference, but the quality and focus of what the student and I decide they need to work on that really makes a difference. This approach continues to the homework, which I cater towards maximising their improvement. I teach in a highly structured way, tackling topics one by one. I encourage questions and discussion and suggest helpful resources. Everyone learns at a different pace and in different ways. My primary aim is to listen and communicate well with each student, so that I can really understand their needs and cater to them; in turn, they get the most out of each lesson. Furthermore, I actively engage each student with what they need (or want) to learn. I try to strike a balance between motivating students whilst working at their own pace. I have also implemented various strategies such as DoK (Depth of Knowledge) and FICT Framework (Familiarity, Independence, Complexity, Technical demand). I have a proven track record of yielding excellent exam results for my students, helping many of them improve by up to 3 grades. Tutoring over 200 students in the past 6 years has been a challenging yet rewarding experience and has given me the opportunity to help children from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities, enabling me to become a well-rounded tutor. For online tutoring I use Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet for video chat and bitpaper.io for an online whiteboard. This has been successful for me and my online students..

Perfect! Adam tutored my son for the last four months before GCSE. He was exceptionally patient and had a very good questioning technique that made my son explain what he was doing. Adam pitched the lessons at the right level and yet they were challenging too. He was also easy going and got on well with my son. He gave him a lot of confidence in going into his GCSE exams and was a significant factor in him performing better than expected. Adam is now helping my daughter in Y10 and we would highly recommend him.
