  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Since I can remember I have always been interested in the world around us. This led to a passion for science and a love of the natural world. My interest in private tutoring arose from when I was at University. I started a job at Numberworks as it suited my timetable, and I had always been good at mathematics. I discovered that I had a talent for tutoring, At a similar time I had several people reach out to me to help with their upcoming exams and I ended up tutoring a number of students.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and English. I teach a range of topics at a range of levels. Those that bring me the most joy are the ones where the students gain an understanding of the subject. It is great to be a part of those moments when it all comes together and you see the realisation in the student that they suddenly understand something, especially if it is something that they previously have struggled with.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My English teacher in form 3 and 4 was an inspiration for me. She got each of us to take our class for 10 minutes and teach our fellow students. I remember her giving me great feedback on how well I had done, this really helped me with my confidence about being able to teach.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Patience, kindness, and empathy.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One valuable school experience was competing in the teams Mathex competition, we didn't have much time to put together our final answers to the questions and as a group we had differing opinions about which answers were right. In the end we chose answers based on gut instinct. When they announced the results they started with the teams that came runners up. They got 9/10 so I thought that we had no chance. However, the next moment we were announced as the winners with 10/10. This was a great feeling and an important lesson in trusting yourself and having faith in your ability.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge that I faced with mathematics was the introduction of having multiple correct answers to a question, after years of expecting a single solution this was a major change.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My particular passion is one to one teaching rather than a particular subject or element of a subject.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions) ?

I am a Superprof due to my passion for teaching and learning. I have a diverse background of teaching and research which allows me to offer different approaches and perspectives to students.
