About Liam

I have been giving lessons since I was 16 years old, working with 11+ and Key Stage 1 students while completing my GCSEs. Later I tutored GCSE students for the whole of their course, helping them earn A*-B grades. At university I was awarded an Emerging Educator's award for tutoring in the local community; I have guided A-level students toward top marks and admission into their first-choice universities. The most fulfilling part of my job is knowing that I’ve taught my students to see the world in a new light.

About the lesson

Hi there! I’m a highly experienced, McGill-educated tutor specialising in English language and literature. Since 2019 I’ve helped students from Key Stage 1 to A-level earn top marks and gain entry into their first-choice schools and universities. I’ve lived a somewhat nomadic lifestyle since finishing uni, and have taught in-person and online for the UK, US, and Canadian education systems.

As a tutor, I think of myself as having two jobs: ensuring my students’ academic success, and encouraging them to become curious, critical thinkers. In one-to-one and small group lessons, I engage students with a friendly, patient, and conversational style that gets students thinking about literature in a way seldom seen in the classroom. I am not a lecturer – I ask questions, encourage discussion, and get students to make connections between literature and the wider world. That’s what makes it exciting, after all! Of course, there’s no shortage of writing tasks along the way; the sooner that students learn the arts of composition and rhetoric, the better. I learn so much from my students, and am always open to their suggestions. The most fulfilling part of my job is knowing that I’ve taught my students to see the world in a new light.

I am familiar with all the major UK exam boards, and often work using past papers. I give helpful feedback to students to boost their confidence before heading into exams. All of my students pass, with many 11+ passes and grades between A* - B at GCSE level. A-level students will notice a marked improvement in their writing and interpretation skills, and I am more than happy to offer guidance for university admissions.

I started teaching Key Stage 1 students in school while completing my GCSEs, and during uni transitioned to agency work. In recent years I’ve done more online work, but I am always happy to take on in-person students if they live nearby. I live in Clapham and enjoy reading, hiking, and playing music.
