About Nicolas

My name is Nicolas and I am a medical student at University of Tübingen, in the Black Forest, now in my 3rd year. I grew up bilingual in German and English, which is why I teach both German and the sciences.

I got into medicine the ordinary way: Leaving Cert in Maths, Biology, Physics, German, and Music. I remember exactly which topics did not click the first time, and how much of the difficulty was the wording of the question rather than the content itself. That is why I enjoy teaching: Watching a student realise that a question is much easier than it first seems and seeing them become confident in the subject is just brilliant!

Medicine keeps me close to the material I teach. Biology and chemistry are not subjects I revised once and left behind: I use them every week. Maths is the tool underneath both, and the students I help most are usually the ones who were told early on that they were "not a maths person" and believed it. I heard it too, once.

I teach German because a language should sound like something people actually say, not like a vocabulary list. I know the grammar rules from the inside and I know which ones examiners look for.

I am patient, punctual, and I talk to students as equals. I would rather ask what the student thinks first and correct from there than lecture for an hour. If you like, parents can expect a short message after each lesson explaining what we covered and what to practise before the next one.

I am a medical student teaching maths, chemistry, biology and German at GCSE and A Level, online and one to one. Standard lessons are 60 minutes, with 90 minutes available for A Level exam preparation and 45 minutes for younger students at Key Stage 3.

Every lesson is built around the specification and exam board the student is actually sitting: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC or Eduqas. I start with a short diagnostic using a past paper question to find where marks are being lost, then work through the topic and the mark scheme side by side, because most lost marks in GCSE science and A Level chemistry come from exam technique rather than from not knowing the content. Each session ends with a short set of targeted practice questions.

In maths I cover Key Stage 3, GCSE foundation and higher tier, and A Level pure, mechanics and statistics. In chemistry and biology I cover GCSE combined science and triple science and A Level, including moles and titration calculations, organic mechanisms, required practicals and the six mark extended answers. German is taught by a native speaker at GCSE and A Level, covering speaking, writing, translation, listening and grammar, and also to adult beginners.

I do not hold a formal teaching qualification. I sat these exams recently, achieved the grades required for medical school and now study medicine, so I am close to the current specifications and to the pressure students are under. I work with students aged 11 to 18, with adult learners, and with sixth formers preparing UCAS applications for medicine.

Lessons are delivered online, so I can teach students anywhere in the UK.
