About Joseph
I've been a filmmaker for the past 9-years with a specialisation in the study of storytelling and screenwriting. I've studied numerous techniques in detail including under Ben Michael's tutelage from the Victorian College of the Arts, Aristotle's Poetics, Corey Mandell's Creative Integration and Jill Chamberlain's The Nutshell Technique.
My films have featured at festivals across Australia including the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival, North Bellarine Film Festival and the Screen It International Film Festival. I've also received multiple screenwriting accolades from competitions including the Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition, Filmmatic Short Screenplay Awards and the Los Angeles Screenplay Awards.
I also lecture in undergraduate screenwriting and short film production at JMC Academy.

I love working with filmmakers and writers on their scripts and creative pieces and I love seeing writers achieve their goals!
In these lessons, I will give you the tools to keep your writing simple and focussed on 4 key storytelling points: essential context, character reversal, goal and opposition.
I often find writers getting stuck trying to fit their stories into stringent frameworks and models, and one of the things I usually start with is breaking a writer out of these chains and freeing up their process. For example, the notion of 'show don't tell' I don't believe is an imperative principle or useful when you're starting out, nor do I think the best writers are concerned with this overly emphasised and overly taught theory.
I take lessons from Poetics and my 9 years of study, simplifying the process into easy-to-use methods and, as well as being a tutor, I work with my students in a script editing capacity, challenging them to push the pen.

Travel costs are only applicable when I travel to a location of the student's choosing. Flat rate $10, 20km from Melbourne CBD maximum. Arrangements outside of 20kms can be made. Alternatively, online lessons are available.
