About Jared
I have a Bachelors degree in Biology from Whitman College where I focused on botany and genetics.
My time as a professional biologist includes work in marine ecology, agriculture, alpine limnology, bacterial genetics, and botany.
In addition, I tutored genetics and organic chemistry as an undergraduate student.

My approach to teaching is centered around critical thinking and exploration. These lessons would be focused on anyone who wishes to explore the beautiful world of biology. I like asking challenging questions and then providing the support a student needs to reach the answer.
My primary goal in teaching is to fuel a students curiosity. Memory is strengthened by emotion. Caring about a topic makes it much easier to learn.
The ability to ask questions and be uncertain is a critical part of learning. I seek to develop questions with a student, putting their particular interests as a priority as they build their relationship with a subject. I enjoy sharing unfamiliarity with a student when confronted with a new idea and then guiding them through my process of breaking a concept down into constituent parts and connecting these to a larger context.
While dynamic, a lesson plan from me may be structured as follows:
-Introduction
i.e. defining technical terms, and providing larger context based on students interests
-Check for understanding
i.e. ask the student to put content into their own words, identify initial misunderstandings
-Application
i.e. challenge the student with a multi-step problem that requires an understanding of the new topic
-Further identify knowledge gaps (areas where a student may focus study time)
-Summary of lesson/session
i.e. put the whole lesson into larger context to help a student build a relationship with the topic
