About Holly

About me: Hi! :) My name is Holly Hill. I'm 26 years old and currently work as a Research Scientist in a molecular lab researching malaria. I love learning and am constantly diving into all sorts of topics, however my favorite topics are Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Microbiology.

Hobbies: Aside from learning, I like to spend my free time going for nature walks with my husband, hanging out with my pet rats, playing games on my switch, or going somewhere new for food and drinks!

A topic I would like to learn more about: Mycology

Education: I obtained my Bachelor's of Science in Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where I took classes in molecular biology, human genetics, yeast genetics, neglected tropical diseases, stem cell ethics, and more! After that, I went on to obtain my Master's of Science in Medical Parasitology from the London School of Hygeine & Tropical Medicine, where under the direction of some of the leading parasitology experts in the world I studied advanced molecular parasitology, diagnostics, entomology, pathogen genomics and vector biology. In my own time, I have also taken classes at my local community college in Human Physiology and Microbiology (plus a Microbiology lab! Very fun).

I love learning, and hope that passion will aid in the overall learning experience and success of my students :)

My experience with tutoring first began as an undergraduate, when I had a tutor of my own! Thanks to the help I received, I was not only successful in the class but went on to earn 2 degrees in the subject, as well as tutor future students in the very same class.

I find visual aids and repetition to be key to learning a new topic, as well as providing examples of the topic in various contexts to gain a deeper understanding, but ultimately my tutoring style will largely vary based on what the student responds best to.

A typical lesson plan will ideally focus on one central topic, such as a biochemical pathway (Krebb's Cycle, electron transport chain, etc) or molecular process (DNA replication, mitosis, etc). In this lesson we will start with an overview of the topic and then work through all of the steps/lessons points together, using flowcharts, drawings, or other visual aids. Once an understanding of the topic is reached we will work through a series of exercises and examples in which the student will be able to independently answer questions that test their knowledge. At the end, the student will attempt to explain the topic back to me to solidify their learning experience.
