About Tom
Kia ora, my name is Tom. I’m a music producer, live sound engineer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Lower Hutt. I have many years of experience in both the creative and technical sides of music, and I now run a small studio where I work closely with artists. We work together on tracking vocals and instruments, producing arrangements and mixing and mastering for release. I’ve worked in studios, on stages, and at live events, supporting musicians at all levels. My background spans a wide range of styles — hip hop, metal, jazz, folk, indie, EDM — and I enjoy helping people discover and shape their sound, whatever it may be. I’m particularly keen to support emerging artists and beginners who want to learn how to record at home, set up a personal studio, or get comfortable with Logic so they can self-release their music. I also help musicians improve their live performances by guiding them on getting the best from their instruments, gear, and sound systems in general. My approach is practical, clear, and super supportive. I focus on real-world skills that build confidence and help you make consistent, meaningful progress with your music.

I take a relaxed, practical approach to tutoring, shaped by years of experience in studios, live sound environments, and independent music production. My aim is to help you feel confident producing and capturing music in a way that works for you, your skill and experience level and the gear you already own.
Lessons are tailored to your interests and goals. That might include:
• Getting started in Logic Pro
• Recording a great vocal performance
• Mic’ing and recording drum kits or acoustic instruments
• Producing & arranging a full song from an initial idea
• Mixing and mastering for release
• Setting up or improving your home studio, including advice on equipment and acoustics
Sessions typically run for an hour, but I’m flexible depending on your energy and needs. I focus on hands-on learning and real-world application, often using your own songs, ideas, or gear as the foundation for lessons.
I’ve worked as a live sound engineer, event producer, and now run my own project studio in Lower Hutt, where I work with vocalists, songwriters, and instrumentalists. I’ve recorded and mixed everything from DIY demos to more polished releases and love helping people turn rough ideas into finished tracks.
Lessons are suitable for teens and adults, especially beginner to intermediate learners who want to:
• Start recording or producing at home
• Improve vocal or instrument recording techniques
• Get more confident with editing, processing, and arranging
• Better understand live sound to enhance their own performances
• Or just demystify the technical side of making music
