About James

I have been in the music industry for over 24 years, I have a BA in sound and music from SaffsUNI
playing in big shows with artist such as Sam Bailey X factor winner and as a session guitarist backed up legendary UK rock n roll pioneer Joe Brown has given me the opportunity to play with fantastic musicians and understand the practicalities of events and music, not just book learning.
I have had radio play of my songs and have recorded as a session musician with other artists.
I have 20 years teaching as I feel passionately that everyone should have access to learning an instrument at an affordable price.
I have had many of my pupils go into the music industry, study music at university.
I am very proud all my GCSE students that I have taught, many of which did no music before coming to me hsve all got A's in music without exception.
I have taught children from 6ys to adults of 78yrs, I and taught children with learning difficulties such as ADHD and autism I am currently teaching an adult who is blind and he's doing great.
I can take pupils through RockSchool grades 1-8, when a pupil passed these grades they gain the same kind of points as passing a maths exam for example, which can be used to help get in to college or university.
I will take pupils who want to learn for fun just to play there favourite songs or pupils who wish to progress to advanced.
I can teach pupils to write songs or music teach arrangements and guide them though digital recording and uploading there music.
Above all music enriches our lives and learning an instrument is something that will give you happiness all your life.

For beginners I initially like to through songs, this gives the student a way of learning techniques, chords or notes while being able to play something, I always teach a new pupil to play a riff or two in the first lesson.
As they get more abilities students will learn the name of the notes on their instrument and start to learn scales, again I often use songs for the student to analyse why these chords were used and how the song was put together.
They would also be playing along to backing tracks, these are full songs but without the guitar, the pupil would have to play the guitar part in time and correct, this is like playing in a band and really helps pupils skills to develop quickly.
(This would be the time to start grades if they wish.)
As the pupil becomes more advance I will each more advanced theory such as musical modes and key changes, chord theory. I have a "Scale & mode finder wheel" I invented to help them to visualise, understand and find the notes from major and minor scales and how they relate to modes and advances chord theory.
Also they would be developing songwriting, composition and digital recording.
No expensive equipment is needed for this just a guitar an amp, computer and microphone. There is plenty of free recording software I can recommend.
When the student has written something to a good standard I will help them upload there song to YouTube for example and help them to try to get there music played on the radio.
