About Rish

As you can see through my academic history I have a deep-rooted passion for the brain and mind. I have always loved teaching these cognitive topics in a casual setting whether that be to my peers at uni or more recently my research participants. But I would love to branch out and help people in a more formal setting. I am open to teaching anything in these fields but my passion and heightened understanding lie with neuroanatomy, hormones and vision and Aphantasia. Along with this, I have a deep understanding of how to best tackle psychology-related papers and how to structure theses so would be happy to help anyone undertaking their honours or masters too

Although I don't have formal teaching experience I thoroughly enjoyed explaining psychological concepts to my peers and research participants throughout my time at University.

My methodology consists of a conversation-based approach because I believe that the more a topic can interest and engage with you the more you can learn and actually remember and understand the concepts.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I truly believe my love for psychology has been with me since i could have conversations with my friends from an early age, but i really felt it develop strongly in my first year of cognitive psychology at the University of Otago. in that moment I felt I could add book knowledge to my social knowledge of engaging in meaningful and intelligent conversation with people regarding their emotions and their mental health. In terms of interest in private tutoring, my love for education has always been present and i've always tried to take time out of my day to help any friends with their subjects and try to communicate information to them in a manner which they'll truly understand and due to COVID-19 i felt as though i could capitalise on that and become a professional tutor
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily teach psychology with Superprof but within the classes I also run statistics, general maths and occasionally english literature due to students wanting help with their reports. In terms of topics which im discussing with students, it can range from anything like cognitive psychology, to sex and gender studies, to neuroscience and neuroanatomy
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In terms of academic role models I had a high school physics teacher to thank for that. His name was Mr Lobo and the way he communicated difficult physics concepts was through trying to communicate the ideas in a matter which people of my generation would understand. For example relating the topics through appropriate cultural concepts and things which we'd be interested in to make us feel more comfortable with the difficult concepts. At its core he wanted us to understand rather than just have knowledge but not have the ability to use it. I try and model my tutoring style through the same manner.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I believe what makes me a superprof is my ability to take time with each of my students and get to learn about them and bridge any age gap and use that to communicate ideas which I personally found complex in the easiest way possible but in a manner where not only can they talk about it but they can observe examples of the ideas in real life.
