Students can feel chemistry is impossible to learn and just give up hope. To overcome this mental/emotional block, I like to start with very simple problems so that the student can easily see the strategy behind solving chemistry problems. Once the student understands the basics and has gained some confidence, I then introduce more difficult problems. When the lightbulb goes off and the student really "gets it" it is just a matter of applying the same strategy throughout the entire year of chemistry. They just need to learn how to think like a chemist.
