About Laurie
I have been a teacher for 15 years with a heavy focus in Exceptional Student Education (ESE). I've taught students on Access Points, students in behavior supports classes, and have worked as a Varying Exceptionalities teacher, pushing into classes and pulling students out into small groups. I was previously the ESE Specialist at my school and am very familiar with the MTSS/RTI process (leveled supports for learning). Currently, I am the Subject Area Leader for the English Language Arts (ELA) department and part-time Literacy Coach at my Title 1 middle school. When I'm not coaching, I am teaching three classes of 7th grade ELA. I am a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in ESE, mild-to-moderate disabilities, ages birth to 21 years. I hold a Masters in Educational Leadership from American College of Education and am certified in the following areas:

Every lesson is individualized for the students I see. I begin with a diagnostic to assess any skills that may need remediation/reteaching. From there, lessons are designed based on results of the diagnostic. If students are strong in word recognition, then I move on to the language comprehension side of reading. Here, lessons are designed using grade-level aligned skills and materials. However, if students continue to struggle with word recognition, the lessons will focus heavily on phonological skills.
