About Nathan

I am an undergraduate student at Washington and Lee University, studying Math and Economics. I am also studying pipe organ performance through Washington and Lee.

I am a National Merit Scholar Finalist

I have been tutoring math for almost two years, and have been trained in the Mathnasium Method. I am currently employed at Waddell Elementary School in Lexington Virginia as an elementary math tutor.

My skills in explaining math to young children in a way which is easy to understand helps me teach calculus in a more intelligible way; I'm all about building conceptual understanding!

I believe that math students should truly understand what they are doing, not just know how to do what they are doing. For example, simply knowing how to take a square root is not the same thing as understanding that taking a square root is the opposite of squaring a number.

By the time a student reaches calculus, conceptual understanding becomes more critical than ever before. If a student does not have it, they will feel as though they are treading water.

I will not simply teach you how to get an A in your course (although we will certainly aim to do so!), I will also help you to truly understand what you are doing, so that you can apply mathematics to your current class, but also future coursework, or even your future job!

A typical hour-long lesson with me will include the following:

For students currently enrolled in a class:
1. Reviewing your class notes. If you can explain them to me, then you probably understand the material. If not, that's ok! I will supplement your teacher or professor's teaching with my own, including my own notes on the material
2. Going through homework problems. If you want to succeed on your exams, and build conceptual understanding, you will need to be able to know how to do problems and explain to me what you are doing and why! If you are just 'going through the math motions,' you do not fully understand the material, and I will help build further understanding.
3. If we have time, I will introduce you to material that your teacher/professor will be going over within the next week to a month. This way, you will be extra prepared for new material!

For students preparing for a class:
I have created prep course tracks for calculus and precalculus, as well as calculus 3. If you want to do some tutoring sessions before you begin your class, we can go through these!
