About Nev
Hi, I’m Nev.
If you sometimes feel self-conscious about your accent, worry that people don't understand you when you speak English, or simply lack confidence when communicating in English, you're certainly not alone.
I'm a native British English speaker and Cambridge-qualified professional English teacher with over 20 years' experience helping people from around the world communicate more confidently in English.
My qualifications include:
• CELTA
• BA (Hons) in Education
• Master's degree in Teaching English (TESOL), University of Leeds
• 20+ years' experience teaching English at British universities and abroad
I've taught students from Spain, China, Saudi Arabia, France, Brazil, Japan and many other countries at British universities since 2002. I've also taught English in Brazil, France, Portugal and Morocco, giving me a genuine understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with communicating across different languages and cultures.
This experience has taught me that communicating successfully in English isn't simply about speaking “correctly”. It's about understanding different accents, ways of speaking and cultural differences — and being able to make yourself understood by people from around the world.
I also know what it's like to be the person learning another language. I speak Portuguese and a little Spanish, and I've experienced the frustration of knowing what you want to say, not quite being able to say it, and watching the funny face of the person you're speaking to!
That's one reason I'm particularly passionate about helping people with pronunciation, accent and listening skills.
You don't need to erase your accent or change who you are. My aim is to help you speak more clearly, naturally and confidently, so that people can understand you easily and you feel comfortable being yourself in English.
But I'm not just a teacher
-----------------------------
I'm a dad, husband, son, brother and friend. I've started and run my own businesses in tourism and property investment, so I've spent many years communicating with customers, suppliers, colleagues, business partners and professionals in the real world.
I love travelling and experiencing different countries and cultures. Outside work, I love the outdoors, run in the hills and, at the moment, I'm learning to windsurf — so I'm very much still learning new things myself!
I think all of these experiences make me a better teacher.
I'm not interested in teaching English simply as a set of grammar rules. I want to help you develop the language, listening skills, pronunciation and confidence you need to communicate in the situations that matter to you — whether that's at work, university, travelling, living in an English-speaking country or simply having a conversation.
My teaching style is friendly, relaxed and practical, but I'll also give you honest, useful feedback. I'll tell you what you're doing well, where you can improve and, most importantly, how to improve it.
After more than 20 years of teaching, I've learned one important thing:
You don't need perfect English to communicate confidently. You need the right English, the right skills and the confidence to use them.
That's what I'll help you develop.

My lessons are one-to-one, online and built around you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all course and I do not expect you to sit through an hour of grammar exercises!
First, I want to understand why you are learning English, where you feel you need help and what you want to be able to do more confidently.
From there, we work together on the English you actually need.
My teaching combines conversation, pronunciation work, listening practice, targeted language development and realistic situations.
Speaking isn't the whole story
-----------------------------------
Being a confident English speaker also means being a confident English listener.
In real life, you won't always be talking to someone who speaks clear, standard British English. You might be listening to someone from Scotland, America, India or Spain. They might speak quickly, use unfamiliar expressions, have a strong accent or simply be difficult to understand.
So, if needed, we'll work on your listening skills too.
I'll expose you to different accents, speaking styles and realistic situations, helping you develop strategies for understanding people even when their English isn't immediately easy to follow.
The aim is not just to help you speak English more confidently.
It's to help you understand and communicate with people from around the world with confidence.
For example, if your main goal is to communicate more confidently at work, we might practise:
• Starting and maintaining conversations
• Expressing your opinions clearly
• Taking part in meetings
• Making small talk with colleagues
• Presenting ideas
• Handling difficult conversations
• Negotiating and persuading
• Understanding different accents and ways of speaking
If you're concerned about your accent or pronunciation, we'll identify the sounds, stress and intonation patterns that may be affecting your clarity and work on them through practical exercises and conversation, rather than simply trying to make you repeat words from a textbook.
The goal isn't to erase your accent.
It's to help you speak clearly, naturally and confidently — and to feel comfortable being yourself in English.
Every lesson is different
----------------------------
A typical lesson might include a mixture of:
Conversation → listening → feedback → pronunciation work → useful vocabulary and expressions → practical speaking practice
I'll give you corrections and explanations when they're useful, but I won't interrupt every sentence you say. I want you to have plenty of opportunity to actually communicate.
I'll also adapt the lessons as you progress. If something isn't working for you, we'll change it.
Who are the lessons for?
-----------------------------
I work with adult learners (over 20 years old), from intermediate to advanced level, who want to become more confident and effective English speakers.
You might be:
• Working in an international company
• Preparing to study at a UK university
• Already studying in the UK
• Living in an English-speaking country
• Working with English-speaking colleagues or clients
• Preparing for an important presentation, interview or meeting
• Looking to improve your British English pronunciation
• Or simply wanting to stop feeling nervous or self-conscious when speaking English
Use my experience to feel confident in English
----------------------------------------------------
I'm a native British English speaker and CELTA-qualified teacher with a BA (Hons) in Education and a Master's degree in Teaching English (TESOL) from the University of Leeds.
I've spent over 20 years teaching English at British universities, working with students from many different countries and backgrounds.
I have also started and run businesses in tourism and property investment, so I bring plenty of experience of real-world communication outside the classroom.
How long are the lessons?
-------------------------------
I offer one-to-one online lessons, typically 50–60 minutes long (but if we're focused on a task, I won't suddenly end the call!)
The important thing is that the lesson isn't simply an hour of me talking. You'll be doing the communicating.
My job is to give you the right guidance, feedback, explanations and practice so that, over time, you become a more confident and effective English speaker.
And if you want to progress more quickly, I can also set you additional homework tasks between lessons — at no extra cost. These are tailored to what we're working on and might include listening, vocabulary, pronunciation, writing or speaking activities. They give you the opportunity to keep using English between lessons and build your skills and confidence more quickly.
Consistency matters
-------------------------
If you want to become more confident quickly, regular lessons are much more effective than occasional sessions whenever you have time.
Language learning benefits from 'distributed practice' — coming back to the language regularly and building on what you've already learned, rather than trying to absorb everything in one long session.
That's why I recommend choosing regular weekly lessons at a fixed times. It creates a routine, keeps your English active between lessons and gives us the opportunity to build your confidence step by step.
Did you know...?
-------------------
Research into learning and memory consistently shows that spreading practice over time leads to better long-term learning and retention than cramming it into fewer, longer sessions.
So rather than waiting until you have “time to improve your English”, make it part of your routine.
Regular 50–60 minute lessons every week, combined with some simple practice between classes, can make a much bigger difference than an occasional lesson when you happen to have a free hour.
If you already know what you want to improve, we can get started straight away. If you're not sure, that's fine too — we'll work that out together.
