Lesson Breakdown
1. Warm-Up (5–10 min)
Activity: “Spot the Error” — show 3–5 sentences with minor spelling mistakes.
Goal: Get students thinking critically about how words look and sound.
Example: “The buss is late.” → “The bus is late.”
2. Mini Lesson (10–15 min)
Topic: Common spelling patterns and tricky words (e.g., there/their/they’re, receive/recieve, definitely/definately).
I explain: Simple memory tricks (“i before e except after c”) and pronunciation-based spelling cues.
Visual Aid: Have students write each tricky word three times and use it in a sentence.
3. Guided Practice (15–20 min)
Activity: Proofreading paragraph.
Give a short paragraph with 6–8 errors (spelling, punctuation, or grammar).
Students correct it, then explain why each correction was needed.
Goal: Build proofreading awareness and confidence.
4. Independent Practice (10–15 min)
Activity: Students write 5–6 original sentences or a short paragraph using newly learned words.
I provide gentle feedback — highlight improvements and patterns students can keep practicing.
5. Wrap-Up (5 min)
Quick recap of the lesson’s key spelling tips.
End with an encouraging note and a small challenge for the next class (e.g., “Find 3 words you often misspell and bring them next time”).
