About Hanxiu

Hi! I’m Hanxiu, a native Mandarin speaker from China, now living in Ottawa, Canada. I hold a Master’s degree in Language Studies and have university-level teaching experience, where I taught literature and media courses to undergraduate students. Beyond the classroom, I spent several years working in diplomatic and international settings — including a foreign consulate and the United Nations — using Chinese, English, and French every day in professional, cross-cultural environments.
I believe learning Mandarin should feel practical and alive, not like memorizing a textbook. Whether you’re a total beginner trying to survive your first conversation, or an intermediate learner working on tones, grammar structures, or natural expressions, I’ll build lessons around what you actually need — travel, business, HSK exam prep, or just everyday fluency.
As someone who moved countries myself and had to learn to navigate a new culture from scratch, I understand what it’s like to be a language learner.

About the lesson

Lessons are tailored to your goals, starting with a quick level check — many students over- or under-estimate themselves, so this helps me build a plan that actually fits.

Beginners get solid pronunciation and tones from day one (the part self-taught learners usually get wrong), plus practical phrases you can use right away. Intermediate/advanced learners work on natural expression and real spoken Chinese, not textbook Chinese.

I also weave in the cultural stories and origins behind key expressions — knowing why a phrase exists makes it far easier to remember and actually understand, not just memorize.

I also offer HSK prep, business Chinese, conversational fluency, and literature/film-based Chinese (an area I taught at university level). Each lesson ends with a quick recap.

My style: structured but relaxed — mistakes are part of learning.
