My mentality for teaching language is to make it fun, engaging, and personal by incorporating a variety of topics based on what each individual student enjoys. I believe in making each lesson and test as fun for the student as I can while still challenging them and encouraging them to learn.
Something I do differently from most other tutors I have seen is I focus more on teaching English the way a native would speak it rather than very technical and proper English. In my experience, this helps to teach a more natural way of speaking English as opposed to speaking in a way that seems unnatural or unnecessarily proper while still teaching proper grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and speaking. Another benefit of this is familiarizing the student with less proper but very common parts of the language such as slang, analogies, sayings, and phrases.
The method I use to teach is immersion and engagement. By actively surrounding the student in an English environment and engaging with them in English, I hope to provide the best possible scenario to improve their abilities. I also encourage the use of flash cards and notes as well as being receptive to specific requests for topics or teaching methods from the student.
My lessons are intended for those with a basic understanding of English and are made unique to the student. The basic structure I use to construct a lesson is as follows:
Identify what areas the student is strong and weak in during our introduction and ice breakers, create an engaging situation and environment on a lesson-to-lesson basis to practice and improve the weak areas as well as continue practicing the strong areas based on each individual students’ interests, and actively engage with the student by showing interest in what they enjoy.
