  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I'm from Peru and grew up speaking Spanish, even though my grandmother knew a bit of Quechua. Spanish became dominant after the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire in 1532, and it remains important today. Sadly, not speaking Spanish can still lead to segregation and fewer opportunities in my country.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Latin America, like much of the world, has a history of sexism that often hides the contributions of remarkable women like Micaela Bastidas. As Peru's first female hero of independence, she was a key advisor to the indigenous leader Tupac Amaru II and played a crucial role in the rebellion until her capture and tragic death. Despite not speaking Spanish, her legacy endures as a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression, highlighting how Spanish reflects a rich, resilient culture forged through struggle and independence.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

In Peru, we have some fun and unique phrases! For instance, "Asu madre!" is a common expression of surprise, similar to "wow" in English, but in the north, we say "Asu Machu" instead. It's a great way to show off our regional roots. We also have food-related expressions like "Qué palta!" to express embarrassment or "¡Qué piña!" for bad luck. These phrases reflect our love for food and the colorful ways we talk about our experiences!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Language is a core part of our identity, shaping how we see the world and express ourselves. For me, Spanish allows authentic self-expression while living in Australia. Speaking Spanish helps me relax, be playful, and connect with the shared experiences of fellow Latino-Americans, both in our home countries and as migrants.

Living in an English-speaking country has highlighted how deeply language influences our being. Some expressions are untranslatable, reflecting our unique histories and cultures. I've found Spanish to be more passionate and English more practical. With Spanish being the fourth most spoken language globally, its usefulness is undeniable. Learning Spanish also aids in the integration of the growing Latino population worldwide.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main challenges in learning a new language is finding opportunities to converse with native speakers. In Australia, I've learned the most when I had to express ideas in English, and incorporating common phrases has helped me understand the culture better. Practicing everyday expressions with a teacher and gradually speaking with native speakers can be very beneficial. It's important to start with manageable content, as diving into complex topics can be discouraging. Guided conversations and cultural immersion workshops are excellent ways to enhance language skills effectively.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I struggled with spelling in school and only became interested in improving after high school. Spanish spelling can be tricky, especially with the added accents. Now, I find using "vosotros" and "voceo" particularly challenging, as they're not used in my country. I had to learn them to teach Spanish, and I always tell my students that "vosotros" is my favorite conjugation.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I've worked in multicultural environments, and it's fascinating how we all speak Spanish but have different dialects and words. For instance, I remember my Colombian boss greeting me with "¿qué hay?", that literality means "What happened?" and I replied, "Where?" because I didn't understand it meant "What's up?"

I've traveled to several Latin American countries for work and fun, including Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and Panama. I love making local friends and engaging in local activities and politics during my travels. This has helped me understand the diverse perspectives and jargon of different Latino cultures, showing me what a great and varied community we are.
