About Ivor
I have been tutoring for over 9 years, helping students overcome their fear of maths. Too often, classroom teaching focuses on behaviour management and correct answers, a narrow approach which penalises those for whom maths is challenging and/or who lack the confidence to participate.
When tutoring, I encourage students to develop their own style of problem solving whilst equipping them with the basic toolkit for self-directed learning. As their confidence grows, they are able to ask questions, unafraid of making mistakes, and willing to take chances. Informed exploration replaces guesswork when confronted with unfamiliar material, the sign of a mathematician.
Whilst I share the focus of students and their parents on exam outcomes (as a parent of two teenage boys I speak from current experience), I am passionate about building a secure, long-term knowledge base as a passport for life rather than a fleeting success.
Through gaining confidence in their ability to manipulate the core building blocks of the subject, students acquire the tools required to tackle the most challenging questions. In tutoring GCSE Maths for example, I frequently introduce questions from the UK Mathematics Trust challenges where students explore problems of a more complex nature than found at GCSE and iGCSE level. This engenders a spirit of discovery where mistakes provide material for reflection and refinement, rather than carrying the stigma of failure too often encountered within the classroom.
Apart from tutoring maths and related quantitative subjects, my career has spanned international finance, financial publishing, project management, innovation advisory, strategic market analysis and fine food production. In my day to day strategic advisory work, I frequently use statistics and build Excel-based models and wherever possible, I like to introduce these applied uses into lessons.

Ivor tutored my son in Maths to help prepare him for his Army Officer entrance exams. My son has always had very little confidence in his ability to do Maths but under Ivor's excellent coaching he improved greatly and Ivor also managed to increase his confidence and give him faith in his ability to tackle the more difficult problems.
