About Julia

I’m a graduate student in the Program for Biomedical Science at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Due to my research experience, I've developed an interest in translational medicine and developing small molecule targeted therapies for various complex genetic dysfunctions. I’ve started my thesis work, studying small molecules that can be used to attenuate cancer-induced weight loss. After earning a B.S. (Cellular, Molecular, Developmental Biology) at the University of Washington (UW), I worked at Seattle Children’s Research Institute and researched the underlying mechanisms of Leigh syndrome’s progression through mTOR signaling pathways, using FDA-approved pharmacological treatments (Rapamycin, Pexidartinib, etc.). This work has led to five authorships, two being first-person authorships. I have taken courses in Molecular Biology, Organic Chemistry, Genetics, Biochemistry, Developmental Biology, Human Immunology, Developmental Biology, Evolution and Systematics, Entomology, and Cell Physiology. I am also proficient in algebra, pre-calculus, and calculus. As I mentioned, I tutored in math while in undergrad. I worked with multiple students with experience ranging from algebra to calculus. During this time, I implemented different teaching techniques to help students with different learning styles.

As a tutor, I like to personalize my teaching methods based on a student's learning style. Most education systems are designed for one type of learning style and often disregard individuals who are kinesthetic learners.

As a neurodivergent individual, I have had to learn new strategies for studying since I struggled in lecture based teaching. As a kinesthetic and visual learner, I have found that repetition with math is key to recognizing and understanding the pattern.

Once a student understands the strategy, I often provide a worksheet where they can solve multiple similar problems until the rules are recognizable. Additionally, another great way to learn is designing and solving your own problems. This strategy not only works for math, but also works for solving problems in other disciplines like biology and chemistry.
