About Matthew
I have spent the majority of my career as a musician in churches, cathedrals and universities. I am passionate about making music accessible and fun to people of all levels and ages. I understand that not everybody likes all types of music and I do my best to help people find and develop their skills and understanding of whatever musical genre they are passionate about.
I focus on practical technique, but also enjoy exploring the context and history of various types of music to provide a holistic education to my students and open their eyes to the very interconnected world that is the history of music.
I like teaching theory in abstract and interesting ways to allow students to organically develop a natural understanding of how music works, rather than just practising the skills required to pass an exam.
I graduated from the University of Oxford where I was organ scholar at Lincoln College and read music. During my time, I recorded and published a CD which received critical acclaim from the BBC Music and Choir and Organ Magazines.

My approach to instrumental tuition is guided completely by the student. Our first lesson will involve discussing your goals and desires. I am happy to teach for the purpose of grades or exams, or I can just help you learn pieces that you want. Although I will suggest and encourage repertoire to cover different techniques and styles for a holistic overview, I will be focused mainly on what YOU want to do.
Theory tuition can be done remotely, if preferred, and we can work through graded exams or I can help with more advanced university level work with regards to counterpoint and harmony. I can provide feedback and guidance for GCSE and A-level compositions and practical coursework.
I have worked as a teacher in a secondary school and have spent my entire career involved in church music, teaching singing and improving musicianship.
I am happy to take students of all ages and abilities.
Piano up to grade 8, theory up to university level, organ all levels including advice on accompaniment and keyboard skills for any potential university organ scholars.
Lessons will usually be 30min-1hr and on a weekly/bi-weekly basis, but happy to work around the needs of the student.
I am currently Music Director of the Wychwood Chorale and Director of Music at St Thomas' Church, Goring-on-Thames. My passions centre around vocal tuition and direction of choirs and I specialise in French romantic organ music from the late 19th and early 20th century for the organ.

Details
Fees may be altered depending on the level of student, frequency of lessons, and specificity/level of tuition. Very large travelling distances may also attract a small premium. Organ lessons can be held at St Thomas' Church in Goring-on-Thames on a newly renovated three manual pipe organ, or at my home on a two manual digital instrument.
I would also be willing to teach theory in groups which may attract a reduced rate/person.
