About Ed
I am a doctoral candidate at UCL. I've taught at a university level in France and England. My expertise is in European literature.
The act of interpretation fascinates me - using selected elements of a given text to create a new one. The critic would like to get to the essence of a work, to reveal its structure or disclose its essence. He or she is a bit like a make up artist, working to highlight elements of a face that does not change but upon which, to paraphrase Shakespeare, a thousand shadows tend. The great works, like faces, are always changing upon inspection.

I will help you or your child learn how to analyse texts in English, French, or Latin. The aim is to build a simple toolkit of techniques and technical jargon necessary for exams, while also enjoying some of the world's great books.
Lessons in English, French, or Latin literature can include:
- exam preparation
- study focus sessions on a GCSE or A-level text
- university (Oxbridge) interview readiness for arts and humanities subjects (no minimum session number)
- learning how to analyse and interpret texts to improve your marks in English, French, and Latin
- essay and coursework help
- proofreading your thesis
- tailored tuition for adults seeking to become more proficient readers
I will prepare any English, French, or Latin text or author to work with you. This will incur a fee if it is not a UK exam board or baccalaureate text, or a text I know. I happen to love:
- Shakespeare
- 19th century French and English literature
- medieval literature and culture, especially Dante (my specialism)
- contemporary French literature
- poetry
I am competent in English, French, Latin, Italian, and medieval Occitan.
Sessions deliverable at any London postcode or online.
