About Maya
Hi, I'm Maya, a recent graduate of the University of Oxford, where I received a First Class degree in Human Sciences. During my studies, I covered a wide range of biological disciplines, including physiology, ecology and genetics. I then spent a year teaching primarily biology, chemistry and physics at The Academy School, Hampstead. I also taught English and History lessons. I currently work as a medical communications consultant and love to tutor in my free time. I would describe my tutoring style as patient and warm, whilst also targeted, structured and results focused.
I take a personal approach - looking at how each young person learns and their individual strengths and weaknesses. I am passionate about the importance of critical thinking skills, which set young people apart by enabling them to answer the most challenging exam questions. Gaining this conceptual engagement - rather than rote learning facts and formulas, is transformative for understanding and achievement.
For exam preparation I believe in a structured approach which unpacks what an exam board requires, for example, the style of the exam question, and specific expectations of the examiner and syllabus. Alongside this, I work with each tutee to tailor our sessions to best suit their style of learning in terms of exam preparation. I want to empower young people to organise their learning and revision effectively so that they reach their exams confident in their abilities and with exam related anxiety minimised.
