About Sonya
I have extensive classroom teaching experience and have taught students across a wide range of abilities and levels of confidence. This has given me the opportunity to see first-hand what makes the difference between an A and an A*, while my experience as an examiner has given me valuable insight into what examiners are looking for.
Throughout my 20 years in teaching, I have coached many students individually and tutored small groups, helping them not only to achieve examination success but also to develop greater confidence and enthusiasm for the subject.
I particularly welcome students making the transition to A-level Philosophy, as well as Year 13 students who feel that they never quite mastered some of the material covered in their first year.

I help students develop their skills in philosophical argument and analysis and, in particular, learn to argue with intent: a core skill in successful essay writing. I break down difficult concepts and work with each student to find effective ways of remembering the key arguments and counterarguments surrounding different theories.
My approach begins by helping students understand the context of each theory and where it sits in relation to other philosophical positions. We then formulate arguments for and criticisms of each theory in a clear and straightforward way, before moving on to more sophisticated evaluation. Once the student has developed a confident understanding of the material, I help them turn that understanding into well-structured, purposeful essays.
