About Alysa

I tutored a gifted primary school student when I was in year 12. It was a really rewarding experience and it helped me hone my articulation of mathematical ideas. It also made me realise I really like working with students of that age.

This summer I helped mentor a team of year 6 students in "Maths Teams", a new charity that runs maths competitions for gifted state school students. I learned how to work with groups of children and give hints rather than revealing the answer too quickly - a tricky balance to strike when teaching.

I was team captain of my school's Hans Woyda team when I was in year 13 (this is an inter-school maths competition), which meant I captained a team of 4 girls (including myself), one in year 8, one in year 10 and one in year 12. This meant I got to work with and guide older students and developed the right tone for teaching secondary school students.

Finally, I have a younger brother who is in year 7 and a younger sister who is in year 11. I recently helped them with their 11 plus and GCSEs respectively, meaning I am familiar with the syllabus required for both big exams!

I'd like to start off by emphasising how passionate I am about maths! At school, I was awarded the St Paul’s prize for further maths and was selected to be the captain of my school's Hans Woyda team (an inter school maths competition). In my first year at Univ, my tutors selected me to be the Univ Maths President. There truly isn't a more satisfying feeling than completing a difficult problem or getting to grips with a tricky concept and that is the kind of attitude I would like to inspire in tutees.

I am totally well qualified to teach students at any level from primary school up to A Level. I received eleven A stars at GCSE, an A in FSMQ Additional Maths (this is the top grade) and four A stars at A level, in maths, further maths, chemistry and economics.

The basic structure of a lesson would be I would explain a concept and me and the student(s) would work through some examples together. It is really important to have lots of practice in maths because, as I have definitely experienced, it is so easy to think you understand a mathematical concept but you cannot be sure until you try lots of questions! I am skilled in understanding the thought process of students so explanations would be tailored to their way of thinking. If the parents are happy, I would set and mark homework which we could then go through at the beginning of the following lesson. It is so important to learn from mistakes and marking work attempted independently would shed light on areas where understanding is lacking.

As a teacher I am very friendly and patient. I think it is hugely demoralising when teachers lose faith in students and I truly believe anyone can be great at maths so this attitude will motivate my students.
