About Ben
Benedict Lewis-Smith studied music at The University of Oxford (2007–2010), and prior to this was awarded a place as a specialist musician at Wells Cathedral School, Somerset. He is now Director of Music at St Columba’s Church, Knightsbridge and combines this role with a substantial freelance career in London including vocal coaching, accompanying and conducting. He has established choirs for a number of the city firms and in 2018 founded his own group The Iona Consort. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and recently recorded on the digital label Resonus Classics and Regent Records. Recent performances include recitals in the Victoria International Arts Festival, Gozo, and a concert tour of Buenos Aires, where he delivered classes in English song to the students at the Departamento de Artes Musicales y Sonoras. In 2019 he was invited to deliver a choral workshop at St Paul’s School, São Paulo, Brazil, and in London he works with choirs at Westminster School and Hill House International Preparatory School.

Are you an adult keen to learn piano? I’m Benedict Lewis-Smith, an experienced online piano teacher. Tuition is mostly online via Zoom, although I also have limited spaces for home visits in the Maida Vale area and/or my music studio in Knightsbridge, London, SW1. I’ve been teaching music for 13 + years, building a successful music practice in London and worldwide online – giving customised piano lessons to suit intermediate and advanced players.

Previously, I had completely lost my piano-playing mojo. Ben has totally reignited my passion for playing and I really enjoy our lessons. He is kind, patient and always has great tips to help me get over any hurdles.
Ben is everything we were looking for in a piano teacher for our two girls (age 5 and 10). He's a gifted pianist but also a complete natural with kids. He always has a big smile when he arrives, he's 100% reliable and my girls adore him. He makes learning fun and my girls look forward to their lessons every week.
When I retired from work I made three resolutions. One of them was to learn the piano – something I’ve hankered after for most of my life. My problem was finding a piano teacher with whom I wouldn’t feel embarrassed at being a complete tyro.
I met Ben as the accompanist of my choir. He is a phenomenal musician performing professionally on both piano and organ. During interval conversations it became clear he is also a very nice man. I tentatively asked if he would consider giving me lessons as a complete beginner – one of my best decisions for years!
I’ve now had ten lessons with him. I’m still technically incompetent but I’m slowly getting better and it’s a continual surprise hearing beautiful sounds emerge from my efforts on the keyboard.
Ben is completely musical, amusing and wonderfully positive and helpful. He is endlessly sympathetic without being patronising. I feel good at the end of every lesson and only wish I’d met him years ago!
Over the last 3 years Ben has guided me through ABRSM grade 5 theory and grades 6 and 7 piano. He is a truly gifted musician with a real talent for teaching and great generous sharing his knowledge. His lessons are illuminating, interesting and fun. He is kind and patient but always strives to bring out the best in his pupil. I highly recommend him as a teacher for adults or children.
Ben is a wonderful teacher. He explains things very clearly and is very patient as new things are learned. I have learned so much from him and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. Highly recommended.
